Roger Federer holds a bleak lead at top of the rankings – Tennis News
World number one, Roger Federer, needs to stop his arch rival, Novak Djokovic, from winning the gold medal at London Olympics because otherwise, he will lose the number one spot from the Serb superstar who is just 75 points behind
the Swiss Maestro.
The fight for the top spot is on as the two top seeded players have clinched victories in their London Olympics openers. However, those were not so convincing victories by either of the tennis professionals. Federer won the match
6-3, 5-7, 6-3 against Alejandro Falla whilst Djokovic was given a scare by Fabio Fognini who won the opening set 7-6(7) but lost the following two 6-2, 6-2.
Both these players are looking to attain the first ever gold medal of their professional career in the singles category whilst Federer is the defending champion in doubles along with Stanislas Wawrinka.
World number three, Rafael Nadal, has dropped a lot of points in the recent times especially after losing out to the Czech professional, Lukas Rosol, in the second round of Wimbledon Championships. So, he is not a threat to either
of the two competitors. Moreover, the Spanish professional is not contesting in the Olympics as well due to an injury so he will sink further down the tunnel as far as the points are concerned.
At the moment, Federer has 11075 points in total whilst his near rival Djokovic has 11000 points. Nadal is at number three with 8905 points and Murray is at four with 7460 points. Nadal can threaten the two top seeds of Olympics
by winning the US Open title that will commence in September. Otherwise, he will have to work really hard to attain regular points from different tournament to inch closer to the Top-2.
So for time being, the battle is between the Swiss Maestro and the Serb powerhouse. Hopefully, they will contest in the final of the London Olympics at the All England Lawn Tennis Club; same courts where they squared off in the
semi-final of the Wimbledon Championships. Federer dethroned her rival at that time and it’s time for Djokovic to have a revenge mission accomplished.
