Roger Federer hopes that he would be fit for his quarter-final match – Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, ha shared that he expects himself to be at his best physical condition for the quarter-final encounter against Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny at the Wimbledon Championships on Wednesday.
Federer was troubled by a stiff back, when he faced Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the fourth round at the All England Club. He took an injury break for medical treatment, when he was leading 4-3 in the first set.
The Swiss Maestro did not look at his best, as he lost his serve and faced threat of losing the opener but came out of the situation to grab the match in four sets.
Giving an interview after the match, Federer said, “I felt the back going the beginning of the first set, and then I played on it maybe three, four games. I asked for the trainer, the doctor to come out to just talk about it. So
I decided to have treatment inside.”
The Swiss Maestro has reached his record 33rd straight quarter-final. Last year, he was stunned by French player, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the quarter-final. However, this year’s opponent is a player whom the Swiss legend
has beaten in all of their 13 previous meetings. This is one of the reasons that Federer is looking confident to reach the last four.
The Swiss legend added, “Honestly, I'm not too worried. I've had bad backs over the years. I've been around. They go as quick as they came. But of course I have to keep an eye on it now. I have one and a half days, which is a lot
of time, to be quite honest, to work with. Two good nights' sleeps and I'll be 100 per cent on Wednesday.”
Federer is bidding to win a record equaling seventh Wimbledon crown. He will come at par with USA’s former world number one, Pete Sampras, by winning for the seventh time at the SW19. Sampras won his seven trophies from 1993-95
and then 1997-2000.
Federer is the player who ended Sampras’ reign at the All England Club by beating the legendary American in the fourth round of the 2001 Wimbledon Championships.
The Swiss Maestro is also looking to regain the top spot in the world rankings by winning here, as he will overtake Novak Djokovic in doing so. If Federer becomes world number one once again, he will equal Sampras’ another record
of most week at the top position on the ATP World Tour.
