Roger Federer hopes to be fit for Rio Olympics 2016 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Roger Federer, is eyeing to be in shape for the Rio Olympics 2016, a prestigious event held between nations after every four years.
The Swiss Maestro enjoyed a successful 2012 campaign. He reclaimed his top spot at the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings and bagged his 17th Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships. Spicing it further, Federer grabbed his first
Olympics medal in the singles event at the London Olympics and ruled throughout the circuit.
However, his commitment with tennis resulted in less time for home and for practice.
"I've played a lot of tennis. It's been a big challenge, especially with the Olympics and the Davis Cup this year," the Swiss was quoted in a press conference on Thursday.
As a result, Federer is looking forward to play in fewer tournaments so he can stay fit and spend more time with his family. He was further quoted, "I have to make sure that I take care of my schedule, of my body, of my mind. Hopefully I can still stay on
tour for many more years and hopefully play the Olympics here in three and a half years or so, so I have to look far ahead and not just the next six months."
The Swiss veteran, who ended the season at number two in ATP World Tour Rankings, is currently at Sao Paulo for an exhibition match. Looking at the Brazilian’s passion and love for tennis, Federer expressed his views, "There is a lot of passion for sports
here. It's a hot place to play tennis right now."
The 31-year-old played 19 tournaments in 2012 while the world number one, Novak Djokovic, participated in only 17. He added, “I'm not going to play 25 tournaments, but every tournament that I will be playing I'll be emotionally attached to it...”
Federer decided to skip the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, a Masters 1000 event to take rest and recover after the London Olympics where he claimed silver medal. He also withdrew from the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris with fatigue. As a result, he gifted his
top rank to the Serbian Ace.
