Roger Federer; hot favourite to bag gold at the London Olympics 2012? – Tennis Special
World number one, Roger Federer is amongst the top contenders for the gold medal at the fourth coming London Olympics. Despite of 17 Grand Slam titles already in his rack, “286-week on the top” mark surpassed and
having the distinction of being the greatest tennis champions of all times, the Swiss legend has never tasted the flare of the Olympic gold medal in men’s singles category. Nevertheless, this year the scenario might just change.
The 30-year-old is in excellent health, with hardly an injury this season. The reigning world number one seems like an effortless player and has a “reserve tank” to play long tournament like the Olympics. Unlike his rivals, Federer
has always shown a great emotional stability in the advanced stages of the tournaments. This year he is unflappable; majority of the matches indicating his good demeanour.
In a press conference, the Swiss Maestro informed the media, "I had set a goal with my team to try and get back to the top of the rankings, but I never thought with the depth in the game this year that I would have been able to
get it back so quickly. I am extremely proud and honoured to have beaten Pete's record as he was my childhood hero and I have always looked up to him."
On the other hand, the legendary professional is not the only contestant for the Olympic gold. In summer 2008 Beijing Olympics, he was not able to secure any medal in the singles category and was knocked out in
the quarterfinals. However, after the withdrawal of the defending champion, Nadal, the odds for Federer to win a gold medal has definitely enhanced.
Jay P. Granat said, “If Federer were to play any of the top ten players in the world one hundred times, I believe he would win 50 percent of these matches.”
Tournament’s second seed, Novak Djokovic, is as hopeful to secure the gold medal as the Swiss Maestro himself. The Serb being the former world number one dominated the game in the entire 2011 circuit. He was the top seeded player
at the Wimbledon Championships; however, he was shocked to face to defeat at the hands of Federer by 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 in the semi-final brawl.
Andy Murray is the first British man to become the Wimbledon finalist, ever since 1938. The Scot is fully capable of beating the top two considering that the he has the home advantage of the courts of All England Club.
Federer’s most recent victory will indeed be a source of motivation for him to continue to retain the world number one spot. The Swiss veteran has the physical stamina and mental tools to beat any world champion at the grass courts
of Wimbledon.
Many tennis critics believe that, "Federer maintained his brilliance”. Despite of his experience and grip over the game, winning again is never easy. During his outstanding professional career, he has collected enormous sums of
commendable accomplishment and surprisingly, he still has time to add more.
Olympics 2012 is a great opportunity for Federer. He surely deserves to be the hot favourite for securing the gold medal and completing his Career Golden Slam, the only feat missing in his life.
