Roger Federer is at top in Rankings for 2012 points – Tennis News
Roger Federer’s rise continues, as he has moved to the top spot in the 2012 Race to London. To make it simple, the Swiss Maestro is ahead of all of his competitors if only points earned in 2012 are counted.
Federer earned 1000 South African Airways ATP Ranking points after winning the BNP Paribas Open last week, taking his total of this season to 2,820. Djokovic, who was leading before this event with 2,180 points, now stands at second
position with 2,540. The Serbian lost the semi-final, which is why he got an addition of just 360 points. Federer and Djokovic’s rival Rafael Nadal is at third position with just 1800 points.
Since, losing a thrilling five set match at the US Open last year, Federer has won last six of the eight tournaments he has played. The 16-time Grand Slam champion has come out victorious in 39 of his last 41 matches.
After winning in Indian Wells, Federer said, “For me it’s an amazing run I’m on right now I’ve won six of the last eight events I’ve played. I can’t believe myself. It sure feels great.”
The Swiss has a win-loss record of 22-2 in 2012 and is leading all the other players with most wins.
Federer started the season at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, where had to give a walkover to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals due to illness.
The right-hander’s first loss of the year came at the hands of his biggest rival, Rafael Nadal, getting beaten by him in the Australian Open semi-final.
Bearing his second defeat, Federer was upset by the then world number 17, John Isner, during the Switzerland versus USA Davis Cup tie.
The Swiss Maestro had not lost any match after that, capturing three straight titles and maintaining a winning streak of 15 matches. Federer outplayed Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Murray and John Isner in the finals of the ABN AMRO
World Tennis Championships, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and BNP Paribas Open respectively. Federer did not drop even a single set in all three of these title matches.
Federer is still at third position in the 365 day ranking system but he has shortened the gap between him and both of his rivals. A strong performance in next couple of months can bring him to the top spot in the yearly rankings.
He said, “I’m definitely not content. I want to get to more finals like this, this big, and I want to play my best in them. I’m going to keep working.”
The Swiss legend can overtake Nadal at the end of Sony Ericsson Open.
