Roger Federer is happy to play Olympics at Wimbledon – Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, is thrilled that the tennis event at London Olympics is being held at the Wimbledon.
Talking to a private news channel, the legend said, "It's a beautiful thing that it's being held at Wimbledon, and you can imagine what that means for the players. This is maybe going to be the biggest Olympic Games for tennis
players in our lifetime."
The centre court at the SW19 is like a spiritual home for Federer. No one has dominated the grass courts of Wimbledon like Federer in the last decade, winning six titles there. Although he has failed to claim the crown in his last
two attempts but the Swiss Maestro is always considered one of the top contenders at his favourite hunting ground.
The legend added, "I think it's going to be helpful that I've won an Olympic Gold already."
Federer partnered his friend, Stanislas Wawrinka, to win the Gold Medal in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics. However, the 16-time Grand Slam champion has never won any medal in the singles category.
He said, "It's a big goal for me, there's no doubt about it. This is my fourth time. I don't think there's another player in singles who has played four in this era so I am very happy that I'm able to do this. I'm just super excited
and can't wait until it comes around."
The Swiss Maestro was upset by the then world number seven, James Blake of USA, in straight sets 4-6, 6-7(2) in the quarterfinals in Beijing.
Federer was seeded first at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and was favourite to win the Gold Medal but he was stunned by Tomas Berdych, ranked 79th at that time, in the round of 32.
The right-hander gave his best performance when he participated in Olympics for the first time in 2000, losing to Arnaud Di Pasquale of France in the Bronze Medal match. It is an interesting fact that Federer met Mirka, who is
his wife now, for the first time during the Sydney Olympics.
Federer loves to represent his country and still says that winning Gold Medal for Switzerland at the Beijing Olympics is one of the proudest moments of his life.
Swiss Maestro’s arch rival, Rafael Nadal, will defend his title in the singles category at the London Olympics.
Federer would not be participating in the mixed doubles category, which is being included for the first time.
