Roger Federer is just two wins away from fifth Cincinnati title – Tennis News
World number one, Roger Federer, needs to win just two more matches to capture his fifth Western & Southern Open title. Federer has not won any other ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event this many times so far in his career.
The Swiss Maestro had previously won the crown here in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
The 31-year-old is looking the strongest player of the tournament from its start. He defeated home favourite, Mardy Fish, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(4) in the quarter-finals. Federer defeated the American number two in front
of the packed stadium.
During the post match press conference, the Swiss star said, “It was a great atmosphere. I think it was sell out crowd. That always makes it exciting. Playing an American here in America, it's always special. It was pretty
straightforward. Whoever was going to be more aggressive, serve more consistent, and then play maybe a tiny bit better from the baseline was probably going to win.”
Federer has not lost even a single set so far during this event. After a bye in the opener, he defeated Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. The Swiss legend thrashed Australian teenager, Bernard Tomic,
in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion will meet his countryman, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the semi-finals. Wawrinka is Federer’s best friend on the ATP World Tour and his Davis Cup team mate. These two had won Gold Medal in the doubles
event at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. However, they failed to defend their title at the London Olympics at the start of this month.
Federer stated about his match up with Wawrinka, “I have a tough matchup with him. It's going to be a difficult one. It seems like he's playing really well. I'm just excited for him and for me [that] two Swiss guys can make
it to the semis here in Cincinnati. It's great.”
Wawrinka came back from one set to love down to beat Canada’s rising star, Milos Raonic, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
If Federer succeeds in claiming victory over Wawrinka, he will either meet world number two, Novak Djokovic, or Bronze Medallist of London Olympics, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the title match. The Swiss Maestro is featuring
at his first event after losing to Great Britain’s number one player, Andy Murray, in the Gold Medal match at the London Olympics.
