Roger Federer is proud to be compared to Lionel Messi - Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, believes it is pointless to compare him with the Barcelona record-breaker, Lionel Messi, but is happy to be referred alongside him.
The former world number one, Federer, is similar with the Barcelona Ace, Messi, as both have set several records. Federer has the highest number of Grand Slam titles among male tennis players while the 25-year-old has fired a record 86 goals in a year. The
Swiss is delighted that his achievements are compared with Messi’s achievements.
"You cannot compare [me to Messi and Maradona], but I am grateful and proud that I am included in that lot," Federer was quoted in an interview to Ole.
The 31-year-old believes that success can be achieved by staying calm. He thinks that Messi is similar with him as they both stay modest and enjoy their game.
"Messi and I showed that [despite] being good guys we can be successful. And, along the way, we can enjoy life more," the Swiss star reflected.
Federer believes that there is a lot more inside his and Messi’s bags. He commented further, “Maradona, for his personality and how he played, has a great place in history. Messi and I are in a situation more like, we have done things, but we still have
some more to do.”
Currently ranked second in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Federer captured his 17th Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon Championships this summer. He maintained consistency in his game at
the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club and managed to grab a silver medal at the London Olympics. Mustering his season further, Federer reclaimed his top rank at the ATP World Tour Rankings after winning the Grand Slam. He has captured six titles and
ruled throughout the 2012 season.
The Argentinean star on the other hand broke Gerd Muller’s record of scoring highest number of goals in a year after hitting his 85th and 86th goal in the 2-1 win against Real Betis last week. The Argentinean is also the highest goal
scorer in Barcelona at the age of 24.
