Roger Federer makes it to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
The 29-year-old Roger Federer has earned his spot in the year ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held in London from the month of November. The Fed Express clinched his berth after getting the better of his Argentinean tennis opponent Brian Dabul in the first round of the United States Open tennis tournament in New York. The year ending championship on the ATP World Tour highlights the world’s top eight singles tennis contenders along with a total of eight doubles teams playing to be officially crowned at the 2010 ATP World Tour winners.
Roger, a five time ATP World Tour winner from 2004 to 2007 and 2009, joins the current top-ranked Men’s tennis player, Rafael Nadal as the only singles contenders to have confirmed their spot in this season’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Rafa finished as the ATP World Tour winner back in 2008, and has held the top ATP world rankings since June, after grabbing his fifth French Open title.
The 29-year-old Federer will be making his ninth appearance in a row in the season ending tournament. He is also a four time champion in 2003-04 in Houston as well as in Shanghai back in 2006-07. He stands at 29-7 in the championship. The Swiss also made his way into the semi-finals of the competition, held in London back in 2009.
"I am extremely glad as it is the ninth season in a row that I have managed to qualify for the season ending competition,” said Federer on Monday. "I have contested in a variety of different places throughout my professional tennis career and I can surely say that it is one of the fantastic places to play the game of tennis. Therefore, I am definitely looking forward to once again return there in the month of November and finish the year strongly,” added Federer.
This year Roger won his sixteen major trophy at the hard court Australian Open tennis tournament after getting the better of top-ranked Brit, Andy Murray in straight sets. More recently, the Swiss tennis player captured this year’s ATP Cincinnati Masters title, a tune-up event prior to the final Grand Slam, the United States Open tennis tournament of the season. Cincinnati Masters came as his sixty-three title of his career. The right-handed Federer was also a finalist at the ATP World Tour Masters thousand championships held in Madrid.
The championship is the world’s largest indoor tennis competition, where all the top eight tennis contenders are scheduled to play at least three round-robin clashes to confirm the four players that would reach into the semi-final round of the event.
