Roger Federer might go past 300 weeks as the world number one – Tennis news
Swiss tennis genius, Roger Federer, has a huge number of records under his belt and the way he is playing currently, no one knows how many are still to come. The 30-year-old Swiss Maestro has finally surpassed legendary Pete Sampras’
record for reining the tennis world for most number of weeks.
His rise to the world number one spot after his seventh Wimbledon title levelled the 287 weeks’ record to stay on top of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings with Sampras. However, his current form and hard
work hints that Federer might go on to hit number 300 with his record of being the top ranked professional.
Surpassing Sampras’ record is certainly one of the greatest achievements of the Swiss Maestro, particularly in this era with Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal posing heavy threats to his rankings all the time. These two arch rivals
has taken a huge toll out of Federer’s Grand Slam titles tally but the classy Swiss legend has stamped his authority over the game to rise to the top yet another time. A huge number of critics and tennis fans believed that his professional career was on verge
of retirement after two years of struggling tennis. The Maestro proved everyone wrong and strengthened the fact that class always prevails, no matter how tough opponents one have in the professional world.
Only two women tennis players have more number of weeks at the top spot than Federer and they are none other than the all-time great, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. Navratilova reined the women’s rankings as number one tennis
player for 332 weeks, whilst Graf remained on the coveted spot for a massive 377 weeks. She claimed the world number one spot on 11 different occasions and has set a record far beyond the reach of any tennis professional, male or female.
It is very hard to cite that Federer will surpass Graf’s 377 week record but the Swiss tennis master can certainly enter the 300 club pretty soon. His form at the moment is superb and it is obvious that he desires to hold onto
the top spot for the rest of his professional career. Federer needs to show his magic at the upcoming Olympic Games in London and a champion’s performance at the US Open later will certainly propel his total beyond 300. His other two arch rivals, Nadal and
Djokovic, are lagging far behind him with 102 and 53 weeks respectively.
