World number one, Roger Federer, can have his US Open rematch with the Czech tennis ace, Tomas Berdych, in the Davis Cup ties next year. In the recent draws for the 2013 ties of Davis Cup, Switzerland is to face the competitive
Czech squad and it is highly likely that Federer will face Berdych in the singles rubber.
The Swiss Maestro was rated as the hot favourite for winning this year’s US Open Championships but he suffered a shocker at the hands of Berdych in the quarter-final of the Grand Slam tournament. He won the third set of the match
after dropping the opening two but couldn’t sustain his winning impetus in the fourth set to finish on the losing side in the end. Federer was extremely disappointed at his loss and Davis Cup tie next year can provide a perfect opportunity to avenge his defeat
from Berdych.
The top-ranked Swiss leads 11-5 in the all-time head-to-head series against the Czech number one but his loss in the US Open quarter-final has certainly left a bad mark on his mind. Berdych has been victorious against Federer in
the elite tournaments, including a quarter-final win at 2010 Wimbledon Championships and 2004 Athens Olympics. With the Swiss Maestro getting older and losing a bit of his agility on the tennis courts, Berdych can be a real threat to him in the future days.
Team Switzerland will face the Czech visitors from 1st to 3rd of February next year but it must be kept in mind that Federer normally does not play the early rounds of the Davis Cup ties. He played in last
weekend’s playoff against the Dutch team and assisted his side to victory after bagging both of his singles rubbers. Team Switzerland won the tie at 3-2 to ensure its stay in the World Group for 2013 playoffs.
On the other hand, the Spanish squad is drawn to face the Canadians on their home ground, while the United States will host the Brazilian squad. The last draw of the World Group will feature The Germans facing Team Argentina at
its home.
