Roger Federer named top seed at Wimbledon
Roger Federer may have relinquished the No. 1 ranking to Rafael Nadal in the aftermath of the French Open but make no mistake about it, the Swiss is still No. 1 in the Wimbledon organisers’ eyes.
Despite now sitting at world No. 2 in the rankings, defending champion Federer has been named top seed in the gentlemen’s singles draw at Wimbledon this year, while Nadal has to content himself with the tag of top challenger after being named second seed at the All England Club.
World No. 3 Novak Djokovic is the third seed, while Britain’s great Grand-Slam title hope, world No. 4 Andy Murray, will enter the grass court major as fourth seed.
World No. 7 and 2009 runner-up Andy Roddick will be the fifth seed, world No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko has been seeded seventh, while world No. 6 Robin Soderling will be the tournament’s sixth seed.
In the ladies’ singles, defending champion and world No. 1 Serena Williams has been named as the top seed, while sister Venus is seeded second for the tournament.
French Open champion and world No. 6 Francesca Schiavone will be the fifth seed for the tournament, after world No. 5 Elena Dementieva yesterday pulled out of Wimbledon after failing to recover from a leg injury in time for the event.
