Roger Federer needs to win Australian Open to reclaim his world number one spot – Tennis Special
Former world number one, Roger Federer, is desperate to reclaim his lost world number one spot in order to sustain his tennis campaign next season.
He is scheduled to play all the Major tennis tournaments, and he is sure that he will make a remarkable comeback in one of the four Grand Slam championships.
Earlier this year, the right-hander contested until the semi-finals of the Australian Open. He gave all his rivals straight-sets defeat and preserved his upbeat performance. In the quarterfinals, he rallied past Juan Martin Del Potro but suffered a four-set loss, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(5), 6-4, by Rafael Nadal in the semis.
Federer managed a decent performance at the French Open and faced the top ranked, Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. He was unable to put up a good fight and was handed a three-set loss at the hands of the top seeded Serb.
However, many critics believed it was the end of Federer’s golden era on the courts. Some thought he was unable to cope up with the youngsters. But Federer surprised everyone when he secured his win at the Wimbledon Championships on July 8. He surpassed Djokovic and reclaimed the world number one spot once again.
The Swiss professional has been world number one  from 2004 to 2008 and stayed there for a maximum of 237 straight weeks. In 2012, he completed his 302 weeks tenure and continued his world number one place with determination, making it one of the best years of his career.
For the Swiss veteran, this struggle has not been an easy deal. Despite of his age, he continues to progress with a strong passion and the drive to win. The player of his calibre cannot afford to go down to world number three or four, as it will be an end to his superb voyage.
If the 31-year-old wins the Australian Open 2013, then it will be his fourth win at the hard courts of Melbourne. He will surely face a tough deal from the former champion and the reigning world number one, Djokovic.
The right-handers’ return to the top could only be ensured if the Serbian makes an unexpected exit from the tournament. Federer needs to use his skills, swift movement and patience to fight against the might of the younger champions.
