Roger Federer not dishearten, still confident to finish the season on top – Tennis News
All tennis fans were left stunned when the world number one, Roger Federer, crashed out of the US Open Championships in the quarter-final draw. The top seeded hot favourite was outdone by the world number seven, Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, in a four-set thriller, 6-7(1), 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, on Wednesday night.
Albeit being the sixth seeded contender in the draw, Berdych was not expected to topple Federer with such commanding score line. The Swiss Maestro has been in sublime for throughout this season and was bidding for his sixth US Open title at the Flushing Meadows Park. He previously led 11-4 in the head-to-head series against Berdych and was anticipated to do away with the Czech opponent with fair ease. However, it went the other way round and Berdych went on to register the biggest upset of the tournament so far to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam event.
Despite of such disappointing loss, the Swiss tennis genius is still very confident to comeback strongly and intends to bag some more titles before the conclusion of the current season. It is quite obvious that such loss in the quarter-final stages of a Major event might be extremely tantalizing for Federer but he is very hopeful to dominate the remaining season to consolidate his top ranking.
"I mean, in terms of that I tried, I don't have any regrets there," said Federer afterwards. "Obviously, I rarely go through matches where I have no chances. So obviously I missed some tonight again, but that's normal. When you end up losing at the end, you always hope that you made every chance you had. It's just not possible. He probably created more than I did, and that's why he ended up winning tonight. Regrets were early in my days. I was trying to come through and I couldn't figure out how to always be in great shape, always be in a good mood to play, always ready to practice, all that stuff.”
Berdych will carry on with his Grand Slam voyage in New York and will face the Olympic champion, Andy Murray, in the semi-final round.
