Roger Federer ousts David Nalbandian to reach the fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number 3, Swiss Maestro Roger Federer cruised past Argentinean David Nalbandian, ranked 23rd in the world, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the third round of Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in
London on Saturday. It took Federer just an hour and 46 minutes to overpower his opponent.
The Swiss broke Nalbandian in the third game of the first set and consolidated on it to take a 3-1 lead. The Argentinean broke back in the sixth game and equalised the score at 3-3. Federer broke again in the very next game and
this time the Swiss legend did not allow Nalbandian to break back, serving out the set at 5-4.
Federer hit nine aces and sixteen winners in the first set. The Swiss delivered 71 percent of the first serves and claimed 76 percent of the first service points in the opening set.
In the second set, the 29-year-old took lead straightaway as he broke Nalbandian in the opening game and held his serve in the next game to go ahead 2-0. Federer broke the Argentinean again in the seventh game, bagging the set
6-2.
The Swiss kept his first serve percentage at 77 percent and fired a couple of aces in the second set. The right-handed claimed 82 percent of the first service points and 60 percent of the second service points in the second set.
Federer capitalised on both break point opportunities he created on Nalbandian’s serve in the second set.
The third set saw Federer and Nalbandian holding their serve in the first eight games to level the score at 4-4. After that, the Swiss clinched two consecutive games, breaking the Argentine in the ninth game and serving out the
set in the next game to win it 6-4.
The former world number 1 fired twelve winners and three aces in the third set. Federer captured 76 percent of the points on the first serve and 36 percent of the points on return in the third set.
Commenting on his performance, Federer said, "I thought today was a particularly good performance by my side, on my serve again. I think I played a great match."
The Swiss added, "I'm using basically everything in my arsenal, the slice, the drive and so forth. I've been playing really well. I've gotten through the matches comfortably and that's very nice."
The third seed is drawn to meet eighteenth seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the round of 16.
