Roger Federer ousts Florian Mayer to enter Gerry Weber Open quarter-finals: Tennis Special
Former world number one, Roger Federer, got the better of the German contender, Florian Mayer, in straight sets at the Gerry Weber Open 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 6-4, 7-5 victory against the world number 29 to cruise into the quarter-finals at this
Wimbledon warm-up tournament taking place in Halle, Germany.
The Swiss Maestro showed top notch skills to outclass Mayer in one hour and 14 minutes. After pulling out this victory, Federer not only improved to a 4-0 FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the 28-year-old but also
booked a spot in the final eight at this outdoor grass court event.
“I'm very happy with the way things went today. I obviously knew playing against Mayer in the first round was going to be tricky,” Federer stated in a courtside interview. “He's in the Top 30 and has been to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. And I've played
him here on grass before... But I felt I was focussed, was moving well and basically, didn't have any letdowns on my serve. I was able to create a few more chances than he did. I'm through with my first victory on grass this year and I hope it's not my last.”
Seeded second in the tournament, Federer assertively stepped into this ATP World Tour 250 series event and held her opening serve to take the initial lead. The Swiss continued firing angled shots from his arsenal of skills and swiped remaining serves after
blocking the lone breakpoint he faced. Federer got the breakthrough in the last game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win.
Currently ranked third in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Federer kept momentum running in the proceeding set and swiftly swiped his entire serves without facing any real challenge. He cashed in the lone break opportunity in the last game
and sealed the victory with a 7-5 score line.
Summing up the Swiss Ace performance, Federer fired 11 aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 71 per cent as compared to his rival’s 57 per cent. He also brilliantly marked 32 out of 42 points on it and finished the match with 67 points.
The 30-year-old is coming off from a semi-final berth at the French Open, second of the four Grand Slam events held on the red clay courts. He is enjoying a spectacular season and has already captured four titles. Federer went on a 17 match winning streak
which saw him lifting the titles at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Championships, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and BNP Paribas in Indian Wells. He also conquered a clay court tournament on clay and is now bidding to recreate his magic at the grass court
season.
Next in line for the 16-time Grand Slam champion is fifth seeded Milos Raonic who slew the Chinese qualifier, Ze Zhang, with double breadsticks to progress at the Gerry Weber Stadion.
