Roger Federer ousts Janko Tipsarevic to reach final showdown – Mutua Madrid Open 2012
Former world number one, Roger Federer, got the better of the seventh seed, Janko Tipsarevic, in straight sets at the Mutua Madrid Open 2012 on Saturday. He nudged up a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Serbian number two to book a spot in the title-round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place in Madrid, Spain.
The Swiss Maestro ruled throughout this 67-minute clash and consequently trashed Tipsarevic in their fifth meeting. After bagging this match, Federer not only improved to a 5-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the world number eight but also secured a place at Park Manzanares.
"I didn't even know about the number two ranking so that's new to me," said the ecstatic Swiss in a court-side interview after the match. "I'm focused on what I'm doing here this week, trying to play well and get far. I have been feeling better and better as the tournament went on. It's tough conditions today. There was a lot of wind and so forth."
Federer convincingly stepped on the Spanish blue clay courts and plucked his opening serve with self-assurance. He then continued hitting massive forehands and not only held his remaining serves but capitalised on two out of four break opportunities to bag the opener with a 6-2 win. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and pocketed the second break in the last game.
Seeded third in the tournaemnt, Federer carried his rhythm in the following set and earned the desiderated break in the fourth game after cashing in lone break chance. He swiped in his entire serves and pulled out the victory with a 6-3 score line.
Next in queue for the Swiss Ace is the Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, who trounced the 10th seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, in straight sets to set-up this battle. The world number seven exchanged a single break of serve in each set to enforce tie-breakers. He outclassed the top Argentinean in it and clinched the match with a 7-6(5), 7-6(6) success.
