Roger Federer ousts Tomas Berdych in semi-final – BNP Paribas Masters 2011
Third seeded Swiss, Roger Federer outclassed the fifth seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic at the BNP Paribas Masters 2011, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event taking place on the indoor hard courts in Paris, France. He registered
a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Monaco resident Berdych to book a final spot on Saturday.
A former world number one Federer required only eighty minutes to triumph over the Czech, ranked 7th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, on their fourteenth encounter. The Swiss not only avenged his
loss at Cincinnati Masters 1000 event earlier this season but also extended lead in the head-to-head series by 10-4 against Berdych.
The Swiss Ace thundered at Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy and got the first blood in the opening game to have an initial edge. He then maintained consistency in his game and swiped in entire serves to clinch the opener with a
6-4 win. Federer faced zero breakpoint and capitalised on one out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
Federer kept momentum rolling in the final set and held entire serves without facing any breakpoint. In addition to this, he broke the Czech serve in the opening and the last game to seal the set by winning six games to three.
The Swiss cashed in two out of three breakpoint chances to his advantage capitalised fully on the several unforced errors and double faults the Czech coughed.
Summing up the classy Federer’s performance, he manipulated a much better first serve share of 70 percent as compared to Berdych’s 55 percent and registered a spectacular 91 percent win on it.
"The way I played today was really nice," said the blissful Federer. "And then on top of that, getting the 800th win and today making my first [Paris] final and being the first player to do all of those nine [ATP World Tour] Masters
1000 [tournaments].”
The delighted Swiss Master stated further, "I thought the match was tough. I took advantage of Tomas being a touch slow maybe in the first couple of games, because once that machine is warmed up he's a very dangerous player. But
I really played great today. I didn't give Tomas much. I was able to play aggressive and serve good, so it was overall a wonderful performance."
Next up for the Swiss number one is the sixth seeded French Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who bounced back to register a brutal three setter victory over the American John Isner.
