Roger Federer overcomes Nikolay Davydenko to reach round three – Australian Open 2013
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, exhibited yet another display of sheer dominance and class in the second round clash of the Australian Open on Thursday. The reigning world number two wrapped up his second victory of the 2013 ATP
World Tour with an assertive score line of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to march into the round of 32 at the season-opening Grand Slam tournament in Australia.
The glorious Rod Laver Arena at the Melbourne Park witnessed Federer dominating the former world number three for almost two hours. The 31-year-old Swiss took hold of the momentum right from the beginning and remained in the driving
seat all the way to victory. He was phenomenal with his serve game once again, banging nine thudding aces to his opponent’s court and winning 47 out of 62 first serve points en route to victory. He broke the Russian serve three out of 13 times, whilst Davydenko
utterly failed to even craft a single break opportunity in the entire matchup.
The opening five games of the match didn’t witness any break of serve from either side. However, Federer shifted his gears in the sixth game to break into a 4-2 lead. He held his remaining two serves to bag the opening set at 6-3.
The Swiss veteran sustained his winning impetus in the following set and broke Davydenko in the third game to impose a 3-1 lead later. A regular game was followed, with the unseeded Russian contestant failing to recover from the
early loss. The second set finished at 6-4 in favour of the second seeded Swiss.
Federer nailed his third break point of the day in the opening game of the third set. He didn’t give a single chance to Davydenko to recover from the trail and held all his remaining serves. The world number two had no trouble
in serving out of the match at 6-4 and convincingly booked a spot in the third round of the Grand Slam Down Under.
The Swiss Maestro will face the unseeded home favourite, Bernard Tomic, in the third round battle later this week. He defeated Tomic last year at the same venue and will eye to repeat the results this time.
