player who will be remembered for a long time. Federer will leave tennis with an indelible mark in the history of professional tennis on the day of his retirement.
The era of the Swiss Maestro is still going on as he enters the 287th week as the number one player in the world. He surpasses the likes of the legendary American tennis icon, Pete Sampras, with the longest reigning
athlete to hold the number one spot.
On achieving this milestone, the undoubtedly best tennis player the game of tennis is blessed with spoke up and stated, "I had set a goal with my team to try and get back to the top of the rankings, but I never thought with the
depth in the game this year that I would have been able to get it back so quickly. I am extremely proud and honoured to have beaten Pete's record as he was my childhood hero and I have always looked up to him."
Sampras himself was ecstatic to see someone stepping above him and ruling the world of tennis for a longer period. He confessed, “Great effort. The hardest thing to do in sports is the ability to stay on top. Roger has been able
to do so by great play and durability."
The way he started to reign supreme over all other professionals, it was expected that he will achieve the possibly an impossible record made by the best tennis player of his era, Sampras. However, the 30-year-old Swiss superstar
defied all the odds and registered a new landmark for the future players to break.
Federer commenced her reign as the top ranked player in the world on 2 February 2004 and stayed unrivalled until 18 August 2008; 237 weeks of supreme domination on all platforms except clay. The King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, snatched
the throne from the Swiss icon.
In the era of perfect competition, the three latest world number ones, Federer, Nadal and Novak Djokovic, have won 29 out of last 30 Grand Slam Championships. Federer has won 13 out of them and that took his overall tally to 17;
the most for any tennis professional in the history of sport.
