Roger Federer praises Andy Murray and hints him at number one spot – Tennis News
World number one, Roger Federer from Switzerland, honoured the Olympic champion, Andy Murray, and stated that he can become the new number one at his breakthrough season.
Federer admired the British top ranked star by stating that after losing the Wimbledon Championships, Murray rebounded perfectly at the London Olympics. He commented in an interview:
"He's saying the right things. He has results that back up his chances to become world number one, maybe even at the end of the year, maybe at the beginning of the next year. If not then, he's got a shot till next year's Wimbledon almost if he were to win
there."
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer conquered Murray in the final showdown at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. However, the Dunblane, Scotland native made a spectacular reply few weeks later at the same venue. He cruised past his entire
rivals before setting up date with the Swiss Maestro in the final round.
Murray did his homework before entering the Center Court and ultimately crushed the top seed with a breadstick in 116 minutes. He also shocked second seeded Novak Djokovic and 11th seeded Nicolas Almagro in straight sets en route to the title-round.
The 25-year-old showed dismal performances at the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. However, he re-kindled his spark at the US Open, last of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
Murray stomped over several seeded players and proved his class at this major hard court event. He overpowered 15th seeded Milos Raonic, 12th seeded Marin Cilic and sixth seeded Tomas Berdych en route to the final showdown. The Brit
outfoxed second seeded Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller and captured his maiden Grand Slam title. He quickly bagged the opening two sets but lost his track. However, Murray unveiled his class in the deciding set again and clinched the tournament with
poise.
Federer praised the Scot further by stating:
"His reaction was amazing right after not winning Wimbledon against me. Then coming back and winning the Olympics, still battling it out through Toronto and Cincinnati, then bringing the victory home, his first Grand Slam, at the US Open, (I was) very impressed,
great to see."
With the triumph at Flushing Meadows, Murray not only ended 76 years British Grand Slam drought but also climbed to the third spot in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings.
