Roger Federer qualified for the quarter-final round – Western & Southern Open 2012
World number one, Roger Federer prevailed over the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, by a straight sets victory of 6-2, 6-4 and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Western and Southern Open on Thursday. The recently
turned 31, Federer will be campaigning for his fifth title at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament. Previously, the reigning champion had bagged victory in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010 at this venue and desires to lift his fifth trophy in Cincinnati.
Federer told the media in a post match press conference, “It was more a first-strike tennis, and I think I'm just a bit better at it still today. I was able to mix it up well and not have too many hiccups on my own serve.
Then I was able to create some opportunities and take advantage of that and get the win.”
He further added, “He's (Mardy Fish) always been a difficult player to play against for all players on tour, he has everything a player needs: he's got a great return. Now obviously he moves obviously much better than he
has at the beginning of his career. That's nice to see.”
Tomic started the match and lost his serve after the first game. Federer struck a 2-love lead but the Australian quickly picked some momentum and struggled hard to equalize the scores. The Swiss legend hit back and claimed
the next four games, racing away to 6-2.
In the second set, the 6 ft 5in tall Australian built up some pace with his serves. He was able to equalize the scores to 3-all by the middle of the set. However, he failed in holding on and the Swiss professional took advantage,
resultantly nailed down his 6-4 score to claim the match.
Both players bombarded each other with seven aces each and double faulted once throughout the match. Federer kept his serve percentage at 74, winning 37 of 50 points on them. However, Tomic lost the match with serve percentage
of 59 losing 38 of 64 points.
The Swiss Maestro will be competing against Mardy Fish in the quarter-final of the Cincinnati Masters, who defeated Radek Stepanek in the earlier round.
