Roger Federer qualifies for quarterfinals of Dubai Tennis Championships 2011
Number one seed Roger Federer of Switzerland steamrolled his way to the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships 2011 after beating Spaniard Marcel Granollers in his second round match.
The Swiss legend beat Granollers 6-3, 6-4 to make his way to the next stage of the Championships.
“I thought I had chances like in the first round to win it easier. I think obviously the opportunity I had at 4-2, love-40 after playing such a good game, you know, I should have won that game and gone on to serve it out after that. But I was able to serve
out regardless,” stated Federer after the match.
Granollers made it through to the second round of the tournament when he beat Dmitry Tursunov of Russia in the first round. Tursunov was beaten 6-1, 6-3 to be eliminated from the competition.
Meanwhile, Federer faced wild card entrant Somdev Devvarman of India in his first round. Devvarman was thrashed 6-3, 6-3 by the former world number one to be sent home.
Federer will now face Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in the quarterfinals of the Championships. Earlier, Stakhovsky beat Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in the second round to qualify for the next stage.
In other quarterfinals, Frenchman Gilles Simon will meet compatriot Richard Gasquet and Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic will be facing Germany’s Philipp Petzschner. Meanwhile, Serbian Novak Djokovic will go head to head with German Florian Mayer for a place
in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Djokovic and Federer are in the same side of the draw and they might meet in the next round in what will be a replay of the Australian Open 2011 semi-final when the Serb got the better of the Swiss maestro on his way to picking up his second grand slam title.
