Roger Federer receives walkover against Mardy Fish in fourth round – US Open 2012
Top seed Roger Federer earned a walkover against the American star, Mardy Fish, in the fourth round at the US Open 2012 on Monday. Fish was forced to pull out due to precautionary measures from this final of the last Grand Slam events taking place in Queens, New York City, United States.
After reaching round of 16 for the fourth time at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the 30-year-old stated prior to his match against the world number one:
"I regret that I have to withdraw from the US Open for precautionary measures. I was reluctant to do so, but am following medical advisement. I had a good summer and look forward to resuming my tournament schedule in the fall."
Federer on the other hand advanced into his 38th Grand Slam quarter final and inched closer to grab his 18th Grand Slam title. He reflected about Fish’s withdrawal:
"I am really sorry for Mardy. I just want to wish him a speedy recovery. We all want to see him back on tour soon.”
The Swiss Maestro was leading 8-1 in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series before Fish retired from the event.
Next up for the Swiss Ace is the world number seven, Tomas Berdych. Federer commented about his next match-up:
"It will be a tough match against Tomas. We have played many times in the past and he has always been a tough opponent. I will have to continue to serve well and dictate the points."
The Czech top ranked star, Berdych, dismissed the 11th seed, Nicolas Almagro, to secure a place in the final eight at this major hard court event for the first time. He amazingly brushed off both breakpoints he came across to swipe his entire serves. Berdych cashed in four out of nine break chances to formulate a 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-1 score line. The sixth seeded Berdych fired 39 winners and sealed the match with 100 points to set up this epic encounter.
Seeded third in this event, Andy Murray, will join Federer in the quarters. He trounced the Canadian number one, Milos Raonic, in straight sets to advance.
