Roger Federer reigns supreme over Juan Martin Del Potro to reach the final four – Australian Open 2012
It was the 1000th ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour-level match for the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, on Tuesday and he wrapped it up in style. The world number three outshined the Argentine tennis ace, 11th seed Juan Martin Del Potro, in the quarter-final round of the Australian Open to achieve yet another land mark in his illustrious career. Federer took almost two hours to conclude victory in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, marching into the semi-final round of the Grand Slam mega event.
The 2009 US Open champion, Del Potro, failed to show up his class in the Tuesday’s contest and proved to be an easy target for the 16-time grand Slam winner. The Argentine posed some resistance initially but gradually lost his steam as the game progressed. Federer kept building his pace in the game, thumping 38 winners and cracking five out of eight serve breaks to secure a berth in his 30th Grand Slam semi-final.
“I wish it was 1000 wins, but I'm happy with 1000 matches in total, too. It's nice to win this one. I do not remember my 500, and that was the US Open final against Agassi. It's a lot of matches and a lot tennis. Either I have been around for a long time or I'm extremely fit,” expressed Federer after sealing this memorable victory.
The third seed Swiss was off to a flyer in the opening set, breaking into a 3-0 lead right up to take the hold of momentum. Del Potro made an attempt to make a comeback with a serve break in the seventh game but his impetus was halted by the brilliance of Federer, who broke the Argentine serve in the 10th game to close out the first set at 6-4.
The Swiss Maestro carried on his intensity in the following set and only one serve break in the fourth game proved sufficient for him to pocket the set at 6-3. With two sets already under his belt, Federer went for the kill in the third set and stung two decisive break points to wrap up victory in an assertive fashion. He will take on the winner of the match between Tomas Berdych and Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
