Roger Federer sails past Dudi Sela into third round – US Open 2011
Third seed and a five time champion here, Roger Federer continued his struggle for his sixth title at Flushing Meadows as he met and defeated Israeli Dudi Sela for their third round match at the 2011 Us Open on Thursday, 1st
September. Playing at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Swiss maestro took less than ninety minutes to secure a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over the Israeli.
Opening serve in the first set, Federer got off to a strong start. Although Sela held his service for three games, he posed no real threat for the Swiss maestro. Cruising through his own service games, Federer broke Sela in the
fifth game before serving out the set to clinch an easy 6-3 victory for himself.
Although Federer hit eleven unforced errors to Sela’s seven he more than made up for it by hitting four times the number of winners including a well placed ace that he sealed the set with. Riding a single breakpoint opportunity,
Federer was able to go one up in the set score.
Like Superman, Federer was going up, up and away. Hitting hard in the second set, Federer cashed in on twice the number of breakpoint opportunities to bag another set win. Opening serve, Sela had managed to add one game win to
his name and then another in the third with Federer matching him both times. However, from there on the Italian failed to hold any of his service games as he came crashing down to a 2-6 defeat.
Reducing the number of unforced errors, Federer once more managed three times the number of winners along with two aces and a near perfect 93 percent win.
Maintaining his form in the third and final set, the Swiss maestro repeated the feat as he clinched yet another 6-2 win sealing his straight sets victory and the bid for another title here alive.
Having earlier struggled past Santiago Giraldo in albeit straight, yet not so simple sets, Sela was an easier victory for the Swiss. Federer now moves on ahead to play rising Aussie Bernard Tomic or twenty seventh seed Marin Cilic
in the third round as he looks to become the first man ever to hold six US Open titles.
