Roger Federer says, “The goal was to become world number one this year” – Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, reclaimed the number one spot from the Serb tennis ace, Novak Djokovic, after clinching the seventh Wimbledon Championships title of his career at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in July.
Now, what he needs to do is to hang on to that spot for the rest of the season and I have a perfect recipe for the in-form Swiss that can help him sustain his top world ranking for the remaining season. It’s not a straight forward
thing for the Swiss star but it will definitely help him sort out the importance of each tournament that is coming up next.
Federer said, “I would love to finish no. 1 as well for the end of the year. For that it’s going to take a great stretch again, winning Basel, Paris and London I assume to give myself a chance.” He further added, “We’ll see how
it goes. Look, I’m relaxed about it. I’ll give everything I can. I want to get through this season well and finish strong.”
The top ranked Swiss athlete is looking to shape up such a schedule for himself that will allow him ample rest before every tournament. He said, “But it’s not the number one goal right now. Right now it’s to manage my schedule,
hopefully be in good shape for Basel, then kind of go from there."
He unleashed his goal that was set as the New Year’s resolution prior to the start of the 2012 season, “Just to repeat, the goal was to become world number one this year, which happened, not the end of the year.” He will have to
be strong; not like what he did in the semi-final of the Shanghai Rolex Masters where he surrendered quite early against the new threat to the top players, Andy Murray.
Federer is not seeking to end the season as the number one player but believes it would be a bonus if that happens. It might sound like a ‘loser approach’ to some critics but the 31-year-old Swiss superstar has achieved so much
in his legendary career that no one can point a finger at him. He is not in the same shape as he was in his 20’s and has definitely lost a lot of stamina. It is just a matter of how long he will be able to hang on to that number one spot before someone more
belligerent and deserving takes it away.
