Roger Federer says that he is still hungry to play at the highest level – Tennis News
Roger Federer, who is regarded as one of the best players to have picked up a tennis racket, has said that he has still got the appetite to win Grand Slams.
The Swiss Maestro also shared that he would try his best to break Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s monopoly on the Majors. Reigning world number one, Djokovic; and second ranked, Nadal, have locked horns in the last four Grand
Slam finals.
Federer is the record holder of most Major titles bagged, with 16 but he has not won any in more than two years. The Swiss Legend captured his last Grand Slam at the 2010 Australian Open. He reached his latest title match at last
year’s French Open, losing to Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Federer is only one week short of Pete Sampras’ record of most weeks as the world number one. He has remained on the top of the ATP Rankings for 285 weeks but has remained away from it in the last
two years.
However, the legendary Swiss player has performed impressively since the end of last year. He captured three titles in the closing months of the last season and four in this one.
Talking to the reporters in an interview, the Swiss star said, "My confidence is very good. I've won many tournaments, so many matches the last year or so that I feel perfect in this regard. I'm match fit and I'm match tough right
now. That's also key going into a grand slam.”
Federer has repeatedly said that he has no plans to retire from professional tennis in the next five years. He wants to add to the tally of his Grand Slam titles, including the Wimbledon Championships.
The Swiss Maestro added, "The hunger is obviously big. I don't think I need to elaborate too much on that. I've explained many times how hungry and motivated I am to be playing, playing at this high level, wanting to win the big
tournaments."
During the coming fortnight, Federer will try to equal Sampras’ record of seven titles at the All England Club by overcoming the challenge of Djokovic and Nadal.
