Roger Federer secures spot for Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
Roger Federer became the second player this year to qualify for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The tournament will take place from November 21-28 at The O2 in London and features the world’s top eight singles players competing for the crown of the 2010 ATP World Tour Champion. Currently ranked No. 2 in the world, the Swiss master clinched his spot with his first round win Monday night against Argentine Brian Dabul at the US Open.
Federer joins Spaniard and current world No .1 Rafael Nadal as the only two players to qualify thus far.
This will be the ninth consecutive year that Federer has qualified for the year-ending championship. He has been crowned ATP World Tour Champion five times from 2004-07 and again in 2009. He has also won the event four times claiming the title in 2003-04 when the event was held in Houston, Texas and in 2006-07 with the tournament taking place in Shanghai. In London last year, Federer was eliminated in the semi-finals and lost the tournament. Despite the loss, Federer was still the ATP World Tour Champion having built up a big enough points lead throughout the year.
"I am very happy as it is the ninth consecutive year I have qualified for the year-end event," Federer said. "I have played in a lot of different venues during my career and I can say they staged a fantastic event at The 02 last year. I look forward to returning there in November and finishing the season strong."
Federer will be looking for a strong end to the season and has set his course to regain the world No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal, who took over the spot on June 7, after his victory at Roland Garros. Federer is currently one week shy of tying Pete Sampras for most weeks at No. 1 at 286 weeks, since the South African Airways ATP Rankings were first introduced in 1973.
