Roger Federer slays Mischa Zverev to set semi-final clash with Tommy Haas – Gerry Weber Open 2013
Top seed, Roger Federer, crippled the local wild card entrant, Mischa Zverev, with double bagels at the Gerry Weber Open 2013 on Friday.
After recording this exceptional 6-0, 6-0 victory, the Swiss set-up a date with the defending champion, Tommy Haas, in the semi-finals at this Wimbledon warm-up event held in Halle, Germany.
The Swiss Maestro remained on track to capture his sixth title in Halle after cruising past Zverev. The players last battled each other at the Internazionali BNL D’Italia in Rome four years ago and after recording this victory, he maintained his winning
record. This was the second time Federer jolted down this spectacular score line.
The 31-year-old reflected in a courtside interview after ruling the battle, “It’s not something that is easy to do. You never anyway go into a match aiming for that score. Eventually you start feeling that there is an opportunity maybe and even then it’s
not what you really want to think about because at the end of the day you just want to win the match and not start thinking too far ahead and then it comes back and gets you. I was very surprised today that it happened, especially on the grass.”
Federer showed his class from the start of this match. He swiftly bagged his entire serves without facing any resilience. The Swiss availed three out of five break chances to cruise to 6-0 win.
In the following set, Federer clobbered a lower first serve ratio of 58 per cent in contrast with the German’s 76 per cent but brilliantly clicked eight out of 10 points on it. He was again never threatened with any breakpoint and cashed three out of five
break opportunities to pull out the second bagel.
On the whole, the five-time winner fired four aces and committed fewer double faults. He dominated throughout the battle and ended the match with 54 points.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer, will take on the third seed, Haas. The Swiss is looking to avenge his loss at the last year’s title-round against the 35-year-old. Federer currently leads 10-3 in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against
The former world number two, Haas made an epic comeback from a set down to record a 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 victory against France’s Gael Monfils. He edged out in the tie-breaker of the opening set but found his rhythm afterwards. The German capitalised on three
break chances and sealed the deal in one hour and 53 minutes.
