Roger Federer squanders another Grand Slam winning opportunity – Tennis News
Another moment of sheer disappointment came for the Swiss tennis fans on Friday, when the world number three, Roger Federer, crashed out of the French Open semi-final. The 30-year-old tennis genius was rated among the hot favourites
for winning his 15th Grand Slam title at this year’s Roland Garros.
Federer has been in sublime form this season and had four championship titles under his belt before coming to Paris, France, for his Major tournament campaign. The Swiss Maestro bulldozed all his opponents convincingly to reach
the semi-final of the French Open but couldn’t go past the belligerent world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the crunch game.
It was the same venue last year when Federer outplayed Djokovic in the semi-final brawl and the tennis fans expected the Swiss veteran to repeat the similar results this time as well. It was a below par performance from Federer
as compared to his own high standards and he fell in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7, 3-6, to fritter away another Grand Slam winning opportunity cheaply.
The third seed Federer had declared at the beginning of this season that he has set his eyes upon the world number one spot and hopes to clinch it by the end of the season. He needed a couple of Grand Slam victories to fulfil his
mammoth dream and the French Open was a significant stop in his voyage to glory. He managed to reach the final-four of the tournament but the ever-energized Djokovic proved too good for him to outplay.
“Overall, I did feel my very best coming into the semis today,” said Federer. “I was where I wanted to be, but ran into an opponent who was just better today. Still, it gives me a little bit of a lift coming into the grass-court
season now. I was actually feeling particularly well in the second set, so that one obviously hurts the most to lose. And the first set, too. But in the third, I wasn't able to put a good game together anymore. And the return in particular, obviously with
a two sets to love lead against Novak it's not the same match anymore.”
Speculations about Federer’s retirement have started to erupt once again. Many fans believe the Swiss Maestro better retire from the professional circuit before he drops further in the men’s rankings. However, Federer is still
very hopeful for another surge up the world rankings and aims at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games to redeem his glory.
