Roger Federer steps nearer to his first singles gold medal – Tennis News
Top seeded Swiss, Roger Federer, carries on with the pursuit to secure his first ever singles gold medal at the London Olympics this year. The picture got more clear after he defeated the 10th seeded,
John Isner, in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(5), in a 85-minute thriller at the Centre Court of the All England Club in Wimbledon on Thursday.
While talking to the media Federer said, “I think I am playing my best. I don’t know if I can play a whole lot better. Overall, I’m extremely happy. Obviously, being in the medal matches, at least I’ll get two shots. That’s
why I looked at this match as a final.”
The reigning world number one showed off his good run of form when finished the first set within 35 minutes, making him certain about the success. Subsequently, the American lost his momentum under pressure and tried to create
some tense moments leading to a tie-break in the match. He couldn’t do much in the decider and eventually had to submit in the end.
In the second set, the game kicked as both players belted quick strikes, exhibiting short rallies and fiery winenrs. The Swiss was simply lucky to fire a backhanded return to Isner’s massive shot, with the ball curdling the
net cord and landing on the other side of the court to leave the American in sheer anguish.
Keeping the sports man spirit, Isner believes someone has to lose eventually as his massive serves resulted in his disappointment.
Federer said, "You just feel bad, really -- but relief, because it's finally over".
The 30-year-old legend established his fourth victory against the Isner. Nonetheless, he has never won a gold medal in the singles category and after all these years, it is his turn to bag home the Olympic gold.
He informed the media, "Being in the medal matches, at least I'll get two shots. That is why I looked at this match as a final. You can imagine the relief and happiness I feel right now."
Swiss professional is predicted to be out of the dangerous waters, he will be competing against the world number nine, Juan Martin Del Potro on Friday. Federer has a fair chance to overcome him as he secures a head-to-head
win of 12-2 against the 23-year-old.
His other competitors this season are the toughest of all. This includes the defending bronze medallist, Novak Djokovic and the Andy Murray. Federer had defeated both the players at the Wimbledon Championships earlier this
season and this gave him the confidence against the odds.
