Roger Federer storms past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals – US open 2011
Finally, the world number three, Roger Federer, got his vintage form back at the US Open, defeating the 11th seed hard-hitting Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-final clash on Thursday night.
Suffering two defeats from Tsonga earlier this season, Federer overwhelmed the French this time round, disposing him of in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, to march into the semi-finals of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Playing on the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, the Swiss maestro took just one hour and fifty three minutes to register his 47th victory of the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
It was a magnificent display of sheer dominance from the third seed Federer, who gave absolutely no room to Tsonga to get on top of the game. The Swiss finally avenged his two defeats he has suffered earlier this year at the hands of the French and leads the 3-2 in the current year against the French.
“I played great,” Federer said in an on-court interview after registering victory. “For me it continues, and that is awesome. I’m very happy with the way I’m playing, the way I’m moving and I’m enjoying myself on the court.”
As he is well known for, the belligerent Swiss delivered 72 per cent of his serve on target and reeled off 48 out of 62 first serve points in the matchup to come out as the winner in the end. Federer converted six of his 13 break opportunities en route to victory, while Tsonga cashed in just two out of his three break points in the game.
Federer used his mighty forehand to perfection and 29 fiery winners came from the Swiss racket, with Tsonga lagging far behind with just 17. The third seed faced no real challenge in the contest from the Frenchman and cruised through the three sets to book a berth in the semi-finals of the US Open with complete authority. He will take on the world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the round of four to battle it out for a place in the final of the Grand Slam.
