Roger Federer taking “vital rest”; will make his return at Shanghai Masters – Tennis News
Tennis courts are missing the presence of the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, who is taking a vital lay-off from the professional circuit at the present. The 31-year-old veteran will return to the tennis courts next week to lead the competitive field at the Shanghai Rolex Masters event in China.
The reigning world number one has not been seen in action on the ATP World Tour since his disappointing loss in the quarter-finals of the US Open. He suffered a crushing blow at the hands of the Czech number one, Tomas Berdych, to end his Grand Slam campaign in the round of eight. Federer then led the Swiss squad in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff against Netherlands and took his side to victory by winning his two singles rubbers. The Swiss tennis genius was reported to have said that he is suffering from fatigue and restlessness due to busy tennis schedule and wanted to take a lay-off to regain his strength.
Federer needs to return to the professional circuit to sustain his top rank, since the Serbian Juggernaut, Novak Djokovic, is eyeing to snatch the world number one spot from him. Djokovic is currently featuring the Rakuten Japan Tennis Open Championships and has an excellent chance to close in the ranking points’ gap between him and Federer.
The Swiss Maestro didn’t play the Shanghai Masters event last year but has confirmed his participation in the ATP Masters 1000 event in Beijing. He will lead the tournament seeds, along with Djokovic and the British number one, Andy Murray.
“It will be fantastic to return to Shanghai and the Shanghai Rolex Masters,” Federer said. “I love the city and especially the fans. I've enjoyed great success at the tournament, dating back to the Tennis Masters Cups. I hope all the fans will come out to enjoy the matches.
“Shanghai is one of my favorite cities in Asia, and I look forward to getting back to the Shanghai Rolex Masters. I love the passionate fans, and the facilities and tournament are amazing”
Federer’s ‘vital’ lay-off will certainly allow him to fuel up for the upcoming mega event and he will play for sustaining his world number one spot.
