Roger Federer thinks tennis facilities in Brazil should be improved – Tennis News
One of the best players in tennis history, Roger Federer, has advised the sport’s authorities in Brazil to improve its facilities in their country if they want to organize ATP World Tour events in the future.
The world number two is in Brazilian city Sao Paulo these days to take part in the Gillette Federer Tour. This is Federer’s first trip to Brazil as a professional tennis player. Some of the other leading players in the world are also featuring in this exhibition
event to promote the sport in the South American country.
Federer said while talking to the reporters, “I think some things need to be improved if you want to make sure the fans have the best experience possible. The international media will always make comparisons. You have to think big. Obviously the ATP sets
high standards regarding facilities.”
Career Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova; current world number one, Victoria Azarenka; 15-time Major winner, Serena Williams; former top ranked player, Caroline Wozniacki; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tommy Robredo and Tommy Haas are the top class players, who
are playing Gillette Federer Tour at the 10,000-capacity Ibirapuera gymnasium.
Federer added, “This venue (Ibirapuera) is a little old and it needs to be bigger but the atmosphere is great and the fans incredible. There is no need to worry about that side of things.”
The Swiss Maestro lost to local star, Thomaz Bellucci, in his opening match at the event. Playing on the hard courts, the 31-year-old went down in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 4-6 at the hands of the Brazilian youngster. It was Federer’s first loss against Bellucci
in all of their meetings.
Though, Federer bounced back to defeat French number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in his second match of the Gillette Federer Tour.
Tsonga believes that things will improve in the coming years, “I think in the future Brazil is going to improve a lot. It will host the World Cup and the Olympics which are going to be great events.”
Brazilian Olympics Association and Tennis Federation will have to work to improve tennis facilities in the South American country for the Rio De Janeiro Games in 2016.
