Roger Federer thrashes Bjorn Phau to cruise into round three – US Open 2012
World number one, Roger Federer, stomped over the German challenger, Bjorn Phau, in straight sets at the US Open 2012 on Thursday. He notched up a 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over the world number 83 to power into the round of 32 at this major hard court event
held in Corona Park, New York City.
The top seeded Swiss showed glimpse of his abilities to outclass Phau in their fourth encounter. After stealing the show in one and half hour, Federer stayed on track to bid for his fifth title at the Flushing Meadows and improved to a 3-1 lifetime in the
FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the German. Phau won on their first meeting at Washington twelve years ago but the Swiss had now won three in a row against Phau.
"I like coming forward when I am up," the Swiss stated in a post match press conference. "Just try maintaining that. And if things don't work out that way, you can always play it safe again."
"I don't think it was a matter of him going more to the net or not," Phau praised the Swiss Ace after losing the match. "The way he played today, he was really focused, really playing well, actually."
Federer assertively entered the Arthur Ashe Stadium in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He smoothly held his entire serves after brushing off the lone breakpoint he came across. The Swiss capitalised on two out of five break chances and
clicked the opener with a 6-2 win in 32 minutes.
The 31-year-old kept momentum rolling in the follow-up set. He swiftly bagged his entire serves without facing any barrier. He required a single break of serve and ultimately clinched the set with a 6-3 score line in just under half hour.
The Swiss Maestro continued showing top notch performance in the third set. He was again never challenged with any breakpoint and availed two out of four break chances to seal the set by winning six games to two.
Next in queue for Federer is the former Top 10, Fernando Verdasco, who battled past his compatriot Albert Ramos in four sets to set up this battle.
