Roger Federer through to final of Dubai Tennis Championships 2011
Number one seed Roger Federer stormed into the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships 2011 by beating Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2, 7-5 in the semi-final on Friday.
Federer has not dropped a set in the entire tournament and has only lost his service game once. After the win, Federer improved his career head-to-head record against the Frenchman to 7-1.
After the match, Gasquet said, “Yeah, I had my chance at 5-3. I (made) some bad choices. I went to the net two times and I did a double fault. Against him, it's over ... After, we did a long point and I was a little bit tired after it. The match turned.”
Federer will not meet Serbian Novak Djokovic in the championship final. Djokovic made it through after beating Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic in the other semi-final. The Serb had lost the first set but levelled the match after winning the second. However,
a leg injury forced Berdych to retire in the third set, handing Djokovic an easy victory.
Federer, on his final with Djokovic said, “It's a huge obstacle to play Novak. He has been playing well. Maybe a bit of an up and down performance here this last week, but he's been playing some day matches, some night matches against some tricky opponents,
and that obviously makes it harder ... Look, again his class showed. He made it to another final.”
Upon being asked to compare the championship final to the Australian Open 2011 Men’s singles final, Djokovic said that the conditions in Australia were much slower. He said that the slowness of the surface caused the ball to bounce slightly higher which
was why it suited his style of play.
In addition, Federer stated that he was confident about the way he has been playing. The Swiss legend said that he had not played poorly over the last six months and the tournament was another opportunity for him to add to his title tally.
