Roger Federer throws his weight behind Tiger Woods – Golf news
Away from all the heat and sensational crowd of the TPC Boston, Tiger Woods must be reflecting hard upon the past two years of his life which have pulled him down like a spiralling jet which has lost its engine. Without a win for more than two years and
battering burgeoning injuries on his left knee, Woods also lost many of his faithful allies in the course of time.
His latest victim was his 12 years old trusted caddie, Steve Williams, who was fired last month on a simple matter of caddying for Adam Scott while Woods was under a rehab. For the stellar profile Woods once had, he also made good friends with equally high-profile
players in the happier days of his life. Roger Federer, currently World Number Three in tennis and who has been the finest sportsman in the business, spoke eloquently over Woods’ deteriorating health and form, expressing his concern.
“It's hard to follow, because you know what an athlete wants to do. He wants to be out there and compete and that's what he's not able to do with his injuries right now,” Federer said. “He's done so much in such a short period of time and for such a long
time, actually, which is where I also draw the inspiration from.”
Federer and Woods have ruled their respective sports for a good decade and have been close friends for several years. The duo has also been the brand ambassadors of both Nike and Gillette, which also brought them together on joint ventures for the multi-million
dollar giants.
Federer and Woods were also locked in a friendly bet of who will be the first to achieve Grand Slam title in their careers. Federer went over to achieve the same in 2009 French Open where he levelled Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major titles, while Woods is
yet to bag four more major titles to break Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18.
Federer has been one of the rare compatriots who have chosen to speak in favour of Woods, especially in times when many golf critics as well as the big guns of the sport have decided to look the other way. Federer was talking to reporters on Saturday, September
3, after his third round victory at the US Open.
Federer added, “It's been tough for him the last year. He knows that, it’s been hard to watch. I only wish him the best.”
Woods failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs and is likely to appear in the JB Mere Championship in Australia next month, and will also be part of the President’s Cup this year, primarily on the selection of Captain, Fred Couples.
