Roger Federer to play 2012 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament – Tennis News
ABN AMRO World Tennis tournament takes the Swiss Maestro, Former World No.1, Roger Federer, on board. Swiss tennis legend will take part in the 39th ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament that will be contested in Rotterdam from 13 until
19 February 2012.
Roger Federer will return to Rotterdam after six years break to make his seventh appearance in the tournament. Previously, he featured in this tournament in 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. He maintains an emphatic record
of 54-12 at Rotterdam and has won this title just once, in his last appearance in 2005; he defeated Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia in an absolute three-set thriller.
The Swiss Maestro has won just two titles this year and has been stumbling down the rankings due to inconsistent performance but his legacy of almost a decade would be written in history in golden words. He started his ABN AMRO
tournament journey in 1999 and reached till the quarterfinal but lost at the hands of legendary Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
He marched into the finals of ABN AMRO tournament, after two years, but faced an upset from French, Nicolas Escude, that deprived him of his first ABN AMRO title triumph. He lost to the same contestant in the quarter-final of 2002.
He reached the semi-final and quarter-final of Rotterdam in next two years but couldn’t make it through to the grand finale.
This year has been pretty sub-standard considering the class of Federer. He started the year on high note by winning Doha tournament but was nailed down by reigning World No.1, Novak Djokovic, in most of the tournaments including
Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells and US Open.
World No.2, Rafael Nadal, is another tennis icon that has been halting Swiss Maestro from winning titles this year. He defeating Federer in the semi-finals of Miami and Madrid; then he deprived Federer of Roland Garros title by
defeating him in the final.
Federer lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-final of Wimbledon and then again in Canada in the round of 16. Recently Swiss tennis ace won his second title in Basel defeating the prolific performer from Japan, Kei Nishikori,
in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. He still has another opportunity to win third title of the year by clinching season-end finale, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. It will be a good training ground for the upcoming ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, next year.
