Roger Federer topples Fernando Verdasco to cruise into round four – US Open 2012
World number one, Roger Federer, gunned down the former Top 10, Fernando Verdasco, in straight sets at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Saturday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 success against the 25th seed to power into the round of 16 at this last
of the four Grand Slam events held in Queens in New York City, United States.
The Swiss Maestro showed faultless performance to stomp over Verdasco in their fifth outing at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. After carving out the victory in just above two hours, Federer improved to a 5-0 record in the FedEx ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the Spaniard and advanced into the pre-quarters.
"I had no clue my stats were that good coming in," the Swiss veteran stated in a courtside interview after tumbling Verdasco. "I really tried to play offensive against Bjorn Phau in my second match. I did lose more points than I was hoping to. I think that
gave me the confidence to move forward today and conditions helped that because it was quicker during the day."
The top seed proved his class in the opening set at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. He swiftly slid his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and got the breakthrough in the eighth game to click the opener with a 6-3 success.
Federer maintained his intensity in the follow-up set and got the desiderated break in the opening game to take the initial lead. He dusted away the lone breakpoint he came across to keep his entire serves and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
The 31-year-old carried his rhythm in the third set. He broke his rival’s serve in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Federer swiped his remaining serves with poise and pocketed the set by winning six games to four.
Federer is bidding for his 18th Grand Slam title at the US Open. He is coming off from conquering the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati (trounced second seed Novak Djokovic in the final round) and is in awesome run of form.
The Swiss Ace will face off America’s Mardy Fish who upset the 16th seed, Gilles Simon, in a four-set nail-biter to set up this date.
The Olympic Champion, Andy Murray, will accompany Federer in the fourth round. He battled past Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in a four-set thriller to progress.
