Roger Federer topples Jan Hajek to enter quarters – Bet at home Open 2013
Former world number one, Roger Federer, got the better of the Czech contender, Jan Hajek, in straight sets at the bet at home Open German Tennis Championships 2013 on Thursday. He recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory against the Czech to power into the final eight at this ATP World Tour 500 series event being held in Hamburg, Germany.
The top seed showed his class at this outdoor clay court event and triumphed over Hajek with ease. He is using a new racquet which has a larger 98 square-inch frame and is eyeing to capture his second ATP World Tour title.
With an early break of serve, the Swiss top ranked star leaped to a 3-1 lead. Regardless of squandering his edge in the very next game, Federer stayed calm and held his remaining serves with poise. The Swiss got the breakthrough in the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Currently ranked fifth in the world, Federer carried his rhythm in the following set. He got the coveted break in the sixth game and jumped to a 5-2 lead. He held his serve once again and pulled out the opener with a 6-3 win.
Summing up the 31-year-old’s performance, Federer wasted five match points in the eighth game of the second set. However, he stayed focused and conquered his opponent in one hour and 12 minutes.
The Swiss Maestro is playing his first tournament since suffering a shocking second round exit at the Wimbledon Championships few weeks ago. However, he is eyeing to re-ignite his spark at these German clay courts. Federer returned at this event after five years. He shelved titles here in 2002, 2004-05 and 2007. He also made a title-round appearance here in 2008 where he bowed out to Rafael Nadal.
Next up for the Swiss veteran is the winner of the match between Florian Mayer and Spain’s Feliciano Lopez.
The defending champion, Juan Monaco, also earned the glory later that day. He rallied past the ninth seed, Benoit Paire, in a three-set thriller to progress. The Argentinean star penned down a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in one hour and 36 minutes.
