Roger Federer topples Mardy Fish to enter semis – Western and Southern Open 2012
World number one, Roger Federer, took down the 10th seed, Mardy Fish, in straight sets at the Western and Southern Open 2012 on Friday. He notched up a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory against the 30-year-old to power into the final four at the Lindner Family
Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
The top seeded Swiss displayed exceptional skills to outclass Fish in their 10th meeting. After pocketing this match, Federer improved to a 9-1 FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head record against the world number 20 and
breezed into the semi-finals at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event.
The jubilant Swiss was quoted in a courtside interview after clinching the match:
“Playing an American here in America, it's always special. It was pretty straightforward. Whoever was going to be more aggressive, serve more consistent, and then play maybe a tiny bit better from the baseline was probably going to win. I'm happy I was that
guy tonight.”
Federer assertively entered this Masters 1000 event. He drew the first blood in the opening game and then swiped his entire serves without facing any real challenge. The Swiss cashed in another break chance in the last game and clicked the opener with a
6-3 success.
The 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Federer kept momentum sailing in the following set. He again plucked his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint but squandered his lone break chance, eventually prolonging the set to a tie-breaker. The Swiss took
a 4-2 lead in it before sealing the set with a 7-6(4) win.
The Swiss Maestro ruled throughout this one hour and 27-minute venture. He withstood 10 aces but manifested a better first serve share of 74 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 59 per cent. Federer smashed five aces and sealed the deal with 74 points.
Next in queue for Federer is his compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, who triumphed over the Canadian number one, Milos Raonic, in three sets. The Swiss commented about his next match-up:
“I have a tough matchup with him. It's going to be a difficult one. It seems like he's playing really well. I'm just excited for him and for me [that] two Swiss guys can make it to the semis here in Cincinnati. It's great.”
Federer holds a 10-1 record against his fellow citizen and is in great run of form this circuit. He has captured five titles including his seventh Wimbledon crown.
