Roger Federer tops Janko Tipsarevic in Group B – Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2012
Former world number one, Roger Federer, got the better of the eighth seed, Janko Tipsarevic, with a breadstick at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 6-3, 6-1 victory against the Belgrade native in his first round robin match
at this season-ending tournament taking place in London, England.
Seeded second in this event, Federer notched a record 40th win at this circuit finale after crushing Tipsarevic in straight sets. Battling each other for the sixth time, the Swiss improved to a 6-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the Serbian number two and inched closer towards his seventh title at this event.
Federer commented in a post match press conference:
“I'm happy with my level of play today against Janko, who is obviously a good player. I think it's nice conditions here. I've had a good year. It's true, I feel like I'm striking the ball well after today. I hope it's a sign for more to come hopefully.”
The Serb praised his rival after losing the match:
“I think Roger was just too good. I have not been feeling great for the last couple of days, but even in the previous matches that I played Roger, I wasn't having that much success, as you can see.”
The 31-year-old stormed into The O2 Arena. He drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. Federer held his composure and after sliding his remaining serves, he sealed the opener by winning six games to three. The Swiss was never troubled
with any breakpoint and converted one out of two break chances to his advantage.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer went berserk in the following set. After Tipsarevic plucked his opening serve, the Swiss unleashed exquisite forehands from his arsenal of skills and reeled off following six games. He was again never challenged with
any barrier and cashed three out of seven break chances to prevail.
Ranked second in the world, Federer will face off the fourth seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer, on Thursday.
