Roger Federer trashes Mikhail Youzhny to reach the final showdown – Gerry Weber Open 2012
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, eased into the final of the Gerry Weber Open with straight sets 6-1, 6-4 victory over the 29-year-old Russian, Mikhail Youzhny, in Halle, Germany.
It was the 14th straight win for the second seed Swiss who has never lost to the 31st ranked Russian in his professional career. He has already defeated the Russian on two difference occurrences before this
encounter this year. So, statically there was no chance at all for Youzhny to win this encounter.
Federer started off with a thumping serve hold to love, so did his rival. However, the Swiss stamped his authority earlier in the match with a breakthrough in the fourth game and breezed past his rival to a fantastic lead of 4-1.
Nothing was going in favour of the Russian who was struggling to prove his worth and test his competitor. He lost another serve game and went down to a trail of 1-5. World number three, Federer, bagged the opening set after dropping
just two points on his final serve. He smashed two aces and converted a couple of breakpoints from the allotted three to register a resounding triumph.
First four games of the second set witnessed no trouble at all for the Russian who looked set to have his revenge but suddenly the onslaught from the Swiss dismantled the confidence of Youzhny. He bobbed down and lost a breakpoint
to love that was consolidated masterfully by the Swiss to a two games lead with a serve hold to love.
A swap of breakpoints kept the lead of Federer intact; tested his rival again but couldn’t finish the match in that game. However, five minutes later, he raised his hands to thank the crowd for the applause and became the first
of the two players to reach the finals.
Other semi-final will feature, Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tommy Haas. Both Germans will look to entertain the crowd and grab some early breakpoints to stamp their authority. The winner of that match will face Federer in the final
that will be contested on the eve of Sunday. Kohlschreiber is the defending champion of the tournament.
