Roger Federer trounces Del Potro to reach final showdown – Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012
Former world number one, Roger Federer, stomped over the eighth seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, in two sets’ tie-breaker at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships 2012 on Friday. He jolted down a 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory against the Argentinean number one to
book a spot in the title-round at this hard court tournament held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Battling each other for the 12th time, the Swiss Maestro crushed Del Potro and extended his lead in their FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series by 10-2. As a result, Federer confidently marched into the final round
at this ATP World Tour 500 series event.
"It was a good comeback, especially on a quick court," said Federer. "Obviously with his serve it's not really in your control. [The] same thing almost happened to me in the first set breaker. I think I was up 6 2 as well, and he got back to 6 5. So it's
tough sometimes when it's all about my serve, and then you get a bit unlucky. You clip the tape. He had a couple of chances to hit the ball harder and maybe doesn't hit them as clean.”
Currently ranked 3rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Federer assertively entered the opening set and plucked in entire serves without facing any real challenge. However, he squandered both break chances and dragged the set
to a tie-breaker. The veteran stayed focused in and eventually clichéd the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
The 16-time Grand Slam champion, Federer kept momentum rolling into the proceeding set and smoothly held entire serves. He found four break chances but failed to capitalise on any of them, subsequently imposing a tie-breaker. The Swiss lost his track in
it and went 5-0 down. However, he made an epic comeback at this point and went the distance to pull out the set with a 7-6(6) win.
Summing up the 30-year-old’s performance at this two hours duel, Federer ruled throughout the match. He fired 11 aces and spectacularly clicked 40 out of 45 points on his first serve share.
The Argentinean on the other hand was on verge of pocketing the equaliser but squandered his chance, eventually exiting from this event.
"I think I made a good tournament, and I'm glad with my level at this moment," said the Argentinean about the final.
The Swiss ace will square off against the world number four, Andy Murray, who upset top seeded Novak Djokovic in straight sets to set-up this epic clash. Federer flashed his old self in this tournament and is all geared up to bid for his 72nd
tour-level tournament. He is also looking forward for his fifth title at this hard court tournament. The Swiss Master is coming off winning a title at the Rotterdam ATP event after crushing Del Potro in straight sets in the title-round. He should play his
original game against the British number to earn the glory and conquer the event.
