Roger Federer trounces Denis Istomin to reach quarters – London Olympics 2012
World number one, Roger Federer, got the better of the Uzbekistani contender, Denis Istomin, in straight sets at the London Olympics 2012 on Wednesday. He notched up a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the world number 35 to secure a spot in the final eight at Games

The top seeded Swiss eased past Istomin after showing flawless tennis at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. After pulling out the victory in 81 minutes, Federer not only improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head series against the Uzbek but also powered into the quarter-finals.
“It was tough,” said the jubilant Swiss after clinching the match. “A very difficult first set. I was happy with the way that I was able to turn it around. Denis, I thought, played a very good first set. I didn’t play poorly to let him back into the match.
In the second set, I guess I learned from the first set and was able to bring it home.”
Federer, who captured his 17th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon three weeks ago, high-spiritedly entered this major sports event. He swiftly jumped to a 3-0 lead with a break of serve in 10 minutes. Apart from losing the following three games, the
Swiss remained focused and held his remaining serves with conviction. He got the breakthrough in the last game and clicked the opener with a 7-5 win in 50 minutes
The 30-year-old kept momentum rolling in the following set and got the coveted break in the second game to leap to a 3-0 lead. He maintained consistency in his game and plucked his remaining serves, subsequently sealing the set by winning six games to three.
Overall, Federer ruled throughout the rain-interrupted clash. He is bidding for his maiden Olympics medal in his fourth appearance.
Next in line for the Swiss Maestro is the 10th seed, John Isner, who stunned Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets to set up this battle. The American number one jolted down a 7-5, 7-6(14) score line against the seventh seed in 90 minutes.
