Roger Federer trounces Donald Young in the opening round – US Open 2012
Top seeded player from Switzerland, Roger Federer, clinched a one-sided win over the world number 81, Donald Young of USA, in the first round of the US Open on Monday.
The Swiss legend dropped just nine games throughout the match, beating Young in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and moving a step forward to his record sixth title in the Open era.
The match saw a steady start from both players, as they did not allow each other to break serve in the first seven games and took the score to 4-3 in favour of Federer. The Swiss Maestro did not lose even a single point in the
following two and grabbed it 6-3.
Federer and Young held their opening serves of the second set to take the score to 1-1. The Swiss star struck in the third game but lost his following serve to level it at 2-2. However, Federer captured four back to games after
that to seal it 6-2.
Start of the third set was exactly similar to the second one, as both players won their serve in the first two games to equalise the proceedings at 1-1. Federer snatched a break in the third and this time he managed to consolidate
on it, attaining a 3-1 lead. The Swiss legend maintained his advantage till the end and won 6-4.
Commenting on the match and his opponent during the post match press conference, the Swiss said, "I thought it was good, considering I played a very talented player who I didn’t know much, I haven’t played against him. First round
at the US Open can always bring a lot of pressure with it. It was very windy out there and extremely humid, so I’m just happy I was able to weather the conditions and a dangerous opponent."
Federer was ousted by the then world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals last year. Djokovic went on to beat Rafael Nadal in the final to capture the title. Federer believes that the Serbian juggernaut is the favourite
this time again but media is with the former.
The Swiss Maestro added, "I think it’s a great story that we have so many guys playing well at the same time. Novak to me goes in as the favourite here still at the Open just because he’s defending champion.”
Federer is drawn to play Germany’s Bjorn Phau for a place in the third round.
