Roger Federer trounces Pablo Carreno-Busta in opening round – Roland Garros 2013
Second seed, Roger Federer from Switzerland, eased past the Spanish qualifier, Pablo Carreno-Busta, in straight sets at the French Open 2013 on Sunday. He recorded a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Spaniard to secure a spot in
the round of 64 at this Grand Slam event taking place in Paris, France.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer stayed on track by displaying exceptional tennis skills. After stealing the show in 80 minutes, he edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against Carreno-Busta and improved to
a 55-13 win-loss record at the Roland Garros.
"I think I started all three sets well, was able to get in the lead," said the former world number one in an on-court interview after clinching the match. "Then playing from the lead against a player like him, it's always easier,
and so I put a lot of emphasis on that."
The Swiss Maestro made a thunderous entry at the Court Philippe Chatrier, as he went on a five-game killing spree. Despite losing his serve in the sixth game, Federer held his serve once again and pulled out the opener with a 6-2
win.
Federer maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He cashed two break chances and leaped to a 4-0 lead. The Swiss then held his remaining serves with poise and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to two.
The world number three, Federer carried his rhythm in the third set. He got the coveted break in the opening game to take the initial lead. The Swiss held his entire serves and capitalised on another break chance in the last game,
subsequently clicking the decider with a 6-3 win.
The Swiss is bidding for his second Roland Garros title. Besides this, Federer also secured final berths here in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011.
The 18th seed, Sam Querrey, will accompany the 31-year-old in the following round.
Querrey reflected in a post match press conference, "It feels great to get a win. My other win was on this court, too, so that's the only court I can win on here. The clay season has been a little rough. I just focused on my attitude
out here today and played the best match I've played all year on any surface."
The American seed nudged up a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Lukas Lacko to progress. With this victory, Querrey recorded his second main draw win at these French clay courts in his career.
