Game of tennis has already gotten extremely highly paced but the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, wants the tournament organisers to make even faster tennis courts in the future. Federer’s statement came after his loss to Novak Djokovic
in the final of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals tournament in London.
The 31-year-old has perhaps uttered such statement since a lot of top defensive players are getting increasingly successful against him on the current slower surfaces. He wants to game to become more electrifying with rapid fast
playing surfaces. Such change in the tennis courts will certainly bring a new dimension in the sport, curtailing the lengths of rallies and witnessing more winners in the matches to entertain the crowd.
“It’s an easy fix. Just make quicker courts, then it’s hard to defend,” Federer said. “Attacking style is more important. It’s only on this type of slow courts that you can defend the way we are all doing right now.”
Federer’s recent loss to Djokovic in London depicted a clear picture what the Swiss legend is trying to tell. He played a real aggressive game throughout the matchup, thumping his mighty forehand strokes and manoeuvring his opponent
at his will. However, the Serbian world number one stuck to his strong defensive technique and managed to return the ball to the other side of the net with sharp angels, eventually winning the classic battle.
“What you don’t want is that you hit 15 great shots and at the end, it ends up in an error,” he said. “So I think sometimes quicker courts do help the cause. I think it would help from time to time to move to something a bit faster.
That would help to learn, as well, for many different players, different playing styles, to realize that coming to the net is a good thing, it’s not a bad thing.”
His statement might be taken in a negative sense by some critics, who will think that the Swiss veteran desires such change in the tennis courts for his deteriorating agility. Nevertheless, faster playing surfaces will bring more
thrills in the game and that is certainly something the tennis fanatics love to watch.
