Roger Federer well on course to claim the number one spot – Tennis Special

Many would say that a tennis player’s career is virtually over by the time he touches 30. The sport requires great stamina and amazing physical fitness to remain in the Top-10 rankings. Most of the players lost their steam when
they go past 30 years of age and get sidelined from the intense battlefield of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour. Now if some wants to look a player who is about to get 31-years-old and is super fit for playing, he better watch the Swiss
Maestro, Roger Federer, moving on the tennis courts like a stag.
Holding the third spot in the ATP World Rankings, Federer doesn’t look any near to his retirement in the coming future. He will turn 31 in August this year but the agility of the man is stunning for every tennis lover. Federer
is proclaimed to be the best player in the history of the game so far and his stats and records speak for themselves. The mighty Swiss has 829-188 win-loss ration over his illustrious career, bagging 73 ATP championship titles and winning 16 Grand Slams to
become the most accomplished tennis player in the history.
Federer dropped from the world number spot in May 2010 and has been labouring hard to reclaim his throne since then. He had one of his worse season last year but finally got hold of his vintage form by the end of it. 2011 was the
year which didn’t yield a single grand Slam trophy to Federer, something which only happened before in 2002. However, the Swiss Maestro won four titles to maintain his legacy in some way or the other.
He suffered from a terrible run of form throughout the 2011 ATP season, falling to the fourth spot in the world rankings and Andy Murray clinching the third berth to supersede him. It was the tournament on his home soil, Swiss
Indoors Basil, which ignited the lost spark in Federer and he went on to complete a hat-trick of titles to recapture the world number three spot by the year end. He outgunned his arch rival, Rafael Nadal, in the season-ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP
World Tour Finals and then went on to win the elite tournament.
Federer’s sublime run of form and a 15-match winning streak at the end of 2011 season hinted his fans that the Swiss Maestro is well on course to win the season’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open. He fell in the
semi-final of the Grand Slam Down Under, again losing to Nadal to disappoint his fans.
The Swiss Maestro also lost his singles rubber in the Davis Cup tie against John Isner of the United States to give another shocker to his fans but the following tournaments were to witness the master class of Federer. He outclassed
the former US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro to win his first title of 2012 in Rotterdam and then went on to dump Andy Murray in the final of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The Swiss wind kept blowing in the year’s first ATP Masters 1000 event
as well, with Federer beating Nadal in the semis and then taking down Isner in the final to lift his third successive title of the season.
Federer’s sublime form has drawn him closer to take over Nadal for the world number two spot. If the Swiss Maestro wins the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and Nadal fall out of the tournament early, he will definitely have a huge
chance to climb up to the number two ranking. The Maestro has stated repeatedly that his aim is to reclaim the world number one spot this season and his belligerent run of form clearly depicts that he is well on course to become the top rated player once again.
